The Festival of Healing

10 Dhu'l-Hijjah 1425 - Poem 10
Eid al-Adha, Day 1

By the family
and all who are in the family,
you have not been abandoned
but have been given love in abundance

Did we not find you cruel and hard
and soften you with kindness?
Did we not find you warlike
and give you the peace of hearts?

continued-below-300.gif

Did we not discover you
cold and bitter
and light the fires
of an impossible love for you?

Why then do you frown and turn away?
Is it for you to bar the gate
against the cold and the filthy?

Let them in wherever you find them
If you find them angry, let them in
You were once full of hate

If you find them sinful, let them in
and remember the years you lived crouched
in the shadow of your sin

If you find them ugly,
do not lift the stone of your heart
to throw it at their heads
You were ugly once
and we made you beautiful

Let them in, let them in
Light the lamps, let the table be spread
Bring the bowls of cleansing water
Call together all the people of love
Let the blessings flow like rivers of wine
Let your lips open in praise
Let the festival of healing begin
