Decision

By Fatima Husain

If you were a devout Muslim
When faced with a dilemma
You could pray for Istikhara
And sleep over your decision --
In the morning light all would be clearer.

If you were an Iranian,
You could open the book of Hafiz.
The first word on the right hand side
Would tell you what path to take.

Or as my old teacher said,
Flip a coin and you will know the answer
Before it reaches the ground.

Perhaps my friend, you have your own technique -
If the train is late you will go to her;
or if it is on time, go your own way.
