Introducing MWUzine: Call for Submissions

We are pleased to announce the upcoming launch of a new literary magazine from the publishers of muslimwakeup.com: MWUzine.

The editors of MWUzine (as in "muse-zine") are looking for quality fiction with interesting plots, engaging characters, lovely use of language, and challenging ideas. We welcome all types of fiction - mainstream, genre, experimental, what have you.

While we have a preference for pieces written by Muslims (with or without Islamic content), we will give serious consideration to pieces written by non-Muslims, especially those with Muslim characters or addressing themes of interest to our readers. For instance, a piece written by a non-Muslim about domestic violence, even though it has no Muslim characters, is something we might well accept because domestic violence is something Muslims have to deal with. Conversely, we would be very open to a story with no reference to Muslims or Islam from a Muslim author, but are less likely to accept it from a non-Muslim author. In all cases, we are looking for stories that make the reader think, laugh, cry, or dance with joy.

Manuscripts should be submitted in simple text in the body of an email, not as attachments, in Internet standard formatting: single spaced, Times new Roman font, size 12, non-indented paragraphs, space between paragraphs. Please proof your manuscript carefully for typos and grammatical accuracy! While we expect to have to copyedit each piece, we also expect the author to do her or his work and submit polished work, not first drafts.

Please include at the top of your email the following information:

Author's Full Name
Author's Contact Information (including phone number)
Title of the Story

If you would like to say a few words about your piece, and why MWUzine might be interested in it, this is the place to do so, although it isn't necessary. We will accept your story or reject it on the basis of its own merits.

The subject of the email should be MWUzine Submission: TITLE, with the actual title of your piece. That way, we won't think you are trying to send us spam.

We accept stories up to 7500 words, but prefer pieces in the 2000-4000 word range. We will make exceptions for spectacular pieces, so if your to-die-for story is 7833 words, send it along, but know that it is going to be a harder sell.

We currently are unable to pay for fiction, but you will gain exposure on the Web’s most popular Muslim online magazine, read by thousands around the world.

If your work is accepted for publication, MWUzine retains an exclusive use of Electronic Rights for a period of three months starting from the date the work first appears on MWUzine. MWUzine also retains Electronic Archival Rights and the non-exclusive right to reprint the piece in print or electronic format in the future. You will also retain copyright and the right to be acknowledged as the author of your work.

We hope MWUzine will be the first step towards developing communal support for fiction writers, and that, God willing, someday we will be able to pay pro-rates.
