The In Utero Fasting Academy

I’m a graduate of fasting in utero
If it damaged my brain,
honey do let me know
Exhibit B: My daughter,
womb of ’89. She fine.
Acing her PSAT as we speak
sans food or water,
choosing her way through another
Ramadan testing time
Each woman learns from her body
Pregnant, some of us shine
I loved siphoning my inner pantry
for my little parasite
Inside, it’s iftar 24/nine
—thank you, God, for my plump,
well-cushioned prime
Pregnancy isn’t an ulcer
and I come from a culture
of women versed in its signs
I am not giving advice
or policing your choice—
listen to your belly signals
and I’ll listen to mine
