Al Mujib (The Responsive)

Comments (10)

By Pamela K. Taylor

Let me be a wild camel
Running in the desert
Charging after my destiny
Sand in my toes
Wind in my hair
Like Hajr
I will seek out my God
I will beseech Allah
Fulfill Your Promises
If I run to Him
He will race to me

Mariam I cannot be
I will not be
Chalice of God
Patient, pliant, passive
God sought her out
Poured His Word into her
Willing, she received
Silent, she awaited
Miracles
Bestowed up her
Speaking for her
Hers is not my mold
Femininity need not be
Docile, voiceless, receptive, reactive
Bold Hajr is my totem
She did not content herself
To wait for God
God was receptive of Her.
Al-Mujib, Al-Sami,
Responsive, Hearing
Are these names not glorious, too
Has Allah not chosen them for Himself

There are those who say
Mariam was a perfect woman
The perfect model for all women
But I remember Hajr and Hajj
No rites honor sweet Mariam
No holy days celebrate her yielding spirit
Demanding, assertive Hajr
Persistent, determined Hajr
She we commemorate
She we celebrate
She I will emulate
