One Walnut Hemisphere

Comments (0)

By Mohja Kahf

Half a cigarette tastes like four
at the end of a day abstinent
One walnut hemisphere, poured
over with olive oil, is almost too much
How could I have eaten such
richness, undizzied, before?
A spoonful of tabouleh grows
to a banquet, a continent,
its mountains of chopped tomatoes,
its parsley sprigs like trees—
the abundance of everything shows
Thoreau gives the adhan—
‘Simplify! Simplify your life!’
for the yearly paring of appetite
under Ramadan’s whittling knife
