Britain isn’t worthy of Rushdie
Sunday, Oct. 1, 1989 was a typically chilly morning in London. That did not dampen the enthusiasm of thousands of angry British Muslims who were heading toward the Royal Albert Hall to hear a South African orator, Ahmed Deedat, rip into Salman Rushdie for writing The Satanic Verses.
Nearly 6,000 men, some bussed in from as far as Birmingham, jammed the hall. What happened at the start of the event tells us a lot about the Rushdie saga, which it seems, will not die until the man they now call Sir Salman is sent to his death.

Why the rush to execute Saddam?
Four days after the ugly and degrading execution of Saddam Hussein, neither Prime Minister Stephen Harper nor any other Canadian politician has the courage to comment or say anything on the matter. The execution, which was more reminiscent of...

An appeal to Muslim women: "Reject the Niqab"
ecently, there has been controversy around the veil worn by some Muslim women to conceal their faces. Many have viewed this as a conflict between Muslims on one side and the "Islamophobic" west on the other. Not so. The debate is being waged primarily within Muslim society and is part of the battle for the heart and soul of Muslim communities from Tunisia to Turkey, Indonesia to India, and right here in Canada.
To begin with, the veil is not required by Islam.
None other than Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the Qatar-based Islamic scholar, stated in a Friday sermon that "it is not obligatory for Muslim women to wear the niqab [full face veil]." He added, "The majority of Muslim scholars and I do not support the niqab in which women cover their faces."

A Bully in Military Uniform
Many Canadians are rightfully upset at the derisive manner with which Pakistan's ruler, General Pervez Musharraf, mocked our soldiers serving in Afghanistan. Others are simply scratching their heads, not knowing what to make of the machismo of the general as he locked horns with Carole Off of CBC Radio.

Mixing of Religion and Politics: Why I quit Canada's left wing NDP to Support Bob Rae
But this past Canada Day, I quit the NDP after nearly 17 years - a long journey that has taken me from the trenches of electioneering, to membership on the provincial executive and federal council of the party, work as a political staffer in former premier Bob Rae’s government, and an NDP candidate in the 1995 provincial elections.
Friends and well-wishers called to express their shock, delight, dismay and bewilderment. Why would I walk away from North America's only party of the Left?

Multiculturalism: The Ghettoization of Ethnic minorities
It is time for ethnic minorities to take the next step forward in building a civic society based on respect, dignity and social justice. It is time for Indo-Canadians to interact with Arab Canadians, not only at nomination and leadership bid meetings of prominent white politicians, but simply to get to know each other as fellow Canadians. It is time for Iranian Canadians to attend the Harry Jerome Awards for Black Canadians. That will be a multiculturalism that will be true to its spirit.

Why are we Muslims so silent on Darfur?
It is time for Muslims to rip off Khartoum's mask of deception and speak the truth.
